peer into that book to start a poem?
do you kick each poem down the street
to see if it kicks back? and if so what
emerges to do the kicking? or do you
converse with each poet, inquiring
how he or she gets started on the next?
or do you look between the lines
between the poems for some question
of your own? some spur you wouldn’t see
without the shadows and bars of light
some other poet throws? I know it works
I’ve seen you dive in and pull out
something that squirms and squeals
and begs for mercy while you skewer it
study and write down hopeless words
that somehow rearrange themselves
into a poem so you can let the squealer go”
“oh,” I said a little awed, “I was about to say
that I enjoy their company but I think
you may have hit on something”
