194.365 - where the sun went

I don’t remember where the sun was
whether it was morning or afternoon
only that the light suddenly stopped
and items that had radiated heat
dirt, cobblestones, wood surfaces
and especially metal, wanted it back
then wanted more back, and more
men who had been setting up chairs
for some event got confused
and began taking them down
stacking them in carts
no, no eclipse had happened
no volcano erupted, it was just you
while I still planned where we
might go, what we might see
you guessed it was time to go
at least for you, I was welcome to stay
I had so much I wanted to see and do
but you were ready for home, you thought
wanted your brothers and sisters
your mother’s cooking, and knew
they had no welcome for me
we returned to the hotel and packed
took a taxi to the airport, a plane
back to a hub where separate planes waited
mine to where we flew spacecraft
goodbye you said, and I wished I could
