188.365 - a perfect curse

          let her fit into monosyllables
               W. S. Merwin’s translation of Pedro Salinas

Oh man!
Oh man!  Oh man!  Oh man!
Yes!  Let her who fills my imagination
who whelms my world
who dizzies other men I envy
let her who seemed a star when I first knew her
who turned into a constellation
then whirled into a galaxy
pulling everything and everyone into orbits around her
let her who now centers a cluster of galaxies
twinkle into a mote so small
she fits into monosyllables
no! into grunts
so I may forget her
and telescopes
and never see the sky again
