138.365 - it takes a steady mind not to kill

don’t worry, my friend said
god can find us anywhere
he’ll lead us out of here
I should have known not
to bring him into the desert
I had wanted to distract him
he had gone off on a god craze
and decided to become a preacher
I’d thought a dose of sand
and sunlight might bring him back
but he hadn’t stopped talking god
since we’d left his home at sunrise
I’d wanted to blame him for getting lost
but knew I must not have paid attention
we sat there in the sun and our straw hats
he rambled on about god and his blessings
and I suddenly remembered my maps
there was no way we could have walked
far enough north or south
to miss the city if we just walked west
I told my friend who looked all around us
but what direction’s west, he said to me
don’t they all look the same to you?
but I knew we had outwalked morning
the sun was sliding down the sky
and if we walked toward its direction
the city would appear
he told me of god’s mercy and his kindness
and I kept him walking toward the west
he told me that if I’d just trust god
I wouldn’t get as lost as this
and we kept walking west
as luck would have it
we walked into his neighborhood
and got him home still talking
telling me this time he had proved
god’s intervention to save our lives
I didn’t argue that I’d thought of west
ten hours of mostly not listening
had convinced me of one thing
anything that happens
proves what you want to think
I called another buddy
who drove me out to my car
and hooted at my getting lost
and having to be saved by god
then asked if I needed
him to lead me back
we laughed and he drove off
I started the car and turned on the radio
some preacher hollered more about god’s love
