124.365 - foreknowledge

it was one of those days
the surf refused to rise or fall with the tide
but stubbornly held its ground
and dared the moon to do anything about it
ships lost their way as the currents changed
and storms reeled along the roaring forties
a nest of tarantulas burst apart and scattered
soon covering Arizona with don’t dare walks
a palomino developed Appaloosa spots
and so did a boy who’d only started working on the ranch
while next door two ewes gave birth to goats
and in the city a banker was fired for doing wrong
a police sergeant was arrested for covering up a crime
three of his officers had committed
and three politicians conspired to do something good
for the people they served and represented
the moon rose that night, yellow and purple
and one of the oceans stood on its head
Mrs. Marengas, of course, knew the cause
one of the Martians who’d visited her dream
had told her the great pyramid was about to crack
to let out the beautiful bird, but in the meantime
there would be many interesting days
