or even to the earth
just another day in the USA
a white cop killed a black man
cops went nuts beating down peaceful protesters
a teacher was sentenced for sex with a pupil
a congressman was censured for spending campaign money on his house
a preacher bought a jet for his frequent visits to Europe
and nothing billionaires did made news
the news ended and we looked at each other and sighed
none of our certainties when we were eighteen had survived
none of the country we thought we knew then remained
even the simple truths of astronomy and physics
had drifted far from anything we knew
it's probably just as well that a new generation
is taking over our lost world
I wonder if they'll treat theirs any better
but they're as cocky as we were
adding children to the world
buying new vehicles
planning trips and houses and dreams
all as if the world they know will continue
oblivious to the ruins around them
and the shadows creeping out of the ruins
