116.365 - mirrors

I never knew
what kept the sky so high
instead of pressing ‘round us
like a blanket
or a sheet
I didn’t know
it held out space
giving us a chance to breathe
to fly our planes up to
and out into
the darkness
the emptiness
that so mirrors the inside of us
we who can kill
but seldom cleanly
and almost never
one of us who deserves it
I say it mirrors our insides
and hope someday we prove
that we too sprinkle
that darkness
with points of light
sprinkle that emptiness
with stars of our own
