067.365 - divided

“all life is divided…” she said
and then I did not hear the rest
struck by the aptness of the phrase
yes, cell from cell
animal from plant
predator from prey
vertebrate from in-
in nature, life sprawls
man runs after with a clipboard
carefully separating
the zeroes from the ones
as if, as if, as if
those separations mattered
and they do for study purposes
but if there is a nature
if there is a life
she places a monocell here
a lily there
an orchid on a tree
a lion near sheep
a woman near a man
and doesn’t stand back to watch
divisions
mitosis
war
she’s busy placing a bicell here
a monkey on a plain
a mollusk in the foam
she strews prolifically
almost to the despair
or ecstasy
of women and of men
seeking divisions
