in Houston 1968
my uncle yelled and hollered
at me and at the staff
a black couple stood in front of us ordering
and he was incensed
but not enough to burn quietly
he wanted everyone to know
what a betrayal this was
and that Communists like me
I had long hair and a beard
had perverted even good ole Southern ways
and made him wait
while two black people ordered
and were served
after they left
we ordered and were served in turn
he grumbled all the way home
and hollered at my mother there
at how I had betrayed him
she didn't know what to say
