help me remember the stars are still really there
it’s only living in the city that hides them
help me remember the surf rolls in relentlessly
the city drowns it out with incessant talk
incessant tires peeling free of pavement
help me remember forests still grow on mountains
even though, in the city, I forget to look
unless someone around me reminds, “oh! snow!”
yes, you smile and the real world returns
coyotes prowl and sand gusts off the crests of dunes
a cactus lifts its puff of color and a hawk coasts
on a thermal, a doe leads a fawn learning its world
and I re-learn a world I once knew before I chose
exile in the city where so much make-believe is done
we denizens forget anything real ever happened
until it interrupts like you did just now
and I stop to rejoice and smile and treasure
you
