and flowers, I suppose
yes, how could the world have one
without the other
and yet suppose it had nothing more
butterflies and flowers
and those butterflies
sometimes aggregated
into the pattern of a tree
a lighthouse
or a man
except there was no one here
to perceive such patterns
only things frivolous
and delicate
transitory
it would still be a world
a fascinating world
but one without
anything that fascinated
a world without kindness
kindness requires a killer
who for a moment suspends his killingness
a world without cruelty
cruelty also requires a killer
who can kill cleanly but doesn’t
yes, I think I’d vote for such a world
butterflies and flowers
winds no stronger than breezes
imagine the quiet
