everyone else has to work
so the few citizens
can meet all day
gossip
complain
decide to go to war
or end one
decide how to split the spoils
if the polis won
and all the other votes it takes
to run a city or a state
yes, being a citizen
in a democracy
is an awesome privilege
which means only a few
can have it
if you wonder whether you
would be a citizen or a worker
consider this
if you can hear me
if you can read me
you probably would have been a worker
and men with whips are coming
to drive us back to work
you are probably not very old
and you probably are sick
but don’t worry
it won’t last long
and citizens have plenty to replace you
