she said her days had held
flickers of sunlight before
flashes of brightness
that let her get her sewing done
or housework
including cooking
but after what he said
her days were Alaska’s winter
except with no promise of spring
the only task that kept her going
she said, was cleaning and reloading her gun
which she could do in the dark
