it slithered closer
considered me, I think
how can one tell
what goes on in a mind like that?
it looked at me
but I was sitting still
half-lying as it were
and smelling like a man
a more-or-less clean man does
traces of soap and deodorant
hints of grit and dirt
collected walking
and so, I think, of no interest
not to the snake
it slithered by
I watched the snake
wondered how it moved that way
imagined scales on its bottom side
moving like Caterpillar treads
wondered if it watched humans walk
wondered if it wondered
what made them split and fall that way
instead of lying down
and slithering
like decent animals do
by then, of course, it had passed me
moving across the desert sand
to rendezvous perhaps
or find a colony of rats
something at least
more interesting
than a half-reclining human
half-lost in wondering
