of the building where the insurrection started
people sat back
refused to work
talked with their neighbors
supervisors dashed about
trying to get people back to work
managers ran around
hollering about budgets and schedules
firing groups of people
executives called security
who did not have enough men on duty
or women either
to take on this resistance en masse
and not sure their contract covered
forcible removal of people doing no harm
even when the supervisors began writing down names
people visited and drank coffee
until the end of the workday
by which time the insurrection had spread
to half the odd-numbered floors as well
and news of it infected other buildings
over and over til whole blocks were not working
and in industrial parks people gathered between buildings
talking and talking as if each had something to say
it must have been inconsequential, all that talking
no fires were lit, no managers thrown out windows
people just talked as if they’d never known their neighbors
and some said later it was the most interesting day
they’d ever had at work
and no one was surprised next day
to learn they had been locked out
and cops surrounded working buildings three rows deep
people just went home
and got acquainted with their neighbors there too
while managers fumed and fired supervisors
and executives laid off managers and conspired
to hire slaves overseas to do the work
answer the phones and decline service to customers
slaves worked nearly for free and did nearly as much
until they needed correction when they turned
blankly unresponsive while supervisors explained
in the wrong language
even using whips did not produce
results that satisfied executives
it was a mess and took the world
six months to correct
