stand out like intruders
outposts of civilization
where they are unwanted
denizens of the dark
rats, dogs, feral cats and humans
avoid their invader pools
doing what they must
children of the day
caught outside
dash from pool to pool
trying to find their way
without becoming prey
and succeed often enough
that others try
fail often enough
that we have police
who cannot tell the difference
between denizens and children
and so punish both
